Featured Interview

Liu Xiaodong

In collaboration with ArtAsiaPacific, we present an interview between Liu Xiaodong and ArtAsiaPacific's Andrew Cohen.

Liu Xiaodong is one of China’s most celebrated contemporary artists. Born in 1963, he moved to Beijing to attend the Central Academy of Fine Arts, where he received his BA and MFA. He lives and works in Beijing, and is currently a professor in the painting department at CAFA. Liu is primarily a Figurative painter, capturing snapshots of time with his richly-colored works and interesting use of framing and perspective. His subjects are often common people and those at the margins of society, such as sex workers and the homeless. Liu tends to draw inspiration from scenes of friends and family members doing everyday activities, but his work often alludes to social problems he seeks to highlight through his art. The artist has been exhibited internationally through both group and solo shows, and is represented by a number of galleries. His works have been shown at prominent institutions such as the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

“Times are plentiful but we are sad,” Beijing-based painter Liu Xiaodong tells ArtAsiaPacific. In his latest work, the New Wave artist observes bourgeois opulence that does not guarantee happiness.
